Concert honors retiring PJHS stage collaborators

Twelve years ago, at Port Jervis High School, the cast of "The Wiz" decided to keep rehearsing even though a blizzard was beginning to rage outside.

For three days, they camped out in sleeping bags onstage and ate leftovers in the cafeteria, until the parents plowed down a yellow brick road with hot food. This accidental unity produced one of the most colorful productions ever held at Port Jervis High School.

There was also the time a large, strapping senior put on high-heeled shoes for the first time, and crumpled to the floor after three wobbly steps. He pulled himself up, straightened out his wig and dress, and mastered high heels. Three weeks later, he won audience cheers in "Sugar."

Twenty years ago, you could see the awe on the faces of the dancers the first time they put on their top hats and danced to a backdrop of mirrors in "A Chorus Line," excited not just for the spectacular effect but because Port Jervis was the first school allowed to perform the Broadway classic.

Six years ago, another athlete bounded onstage, hair slicked back in an Elvis/Travolta style, wearing a motorcycle jacket.
